With Spider-Man: No Way Home still breaking box office records, everyone’s no doubt counting the days until the release of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, which promises to pick up the story where things left off. At the end of No Way Home, things in the MCU were very different, and this sequel promises to be a game-changer for the franchise, bringing the much-hyped multiverse into stronger focus. Directed by Sam Raimi (with music by Danny Elfman!), we got our first trailer for the film as the No Way Home post-credits scene, and now Marvel’s released a second full trailer to coincide with the Super Bowl. But, at the 1:16 mark, a pretty major cameo drops, with us hearing the offscreen voice of Patrick Stewart’s Professor X. Oh yes folks, things are about to get wild in the multiverse.

Somewhat darker than the last trailer, this seems to deliver on the promise that this will be as close to horror as we’ve seen in Marvel, with glimpses of Doctor Strange’s evil doppelgänger and Elizabeth Olsen’s Scarlet Witch front and center. Benedict Cumberbatch was a terrific part of Spider-Man: No Way Home, and I’m eager to see how the sequel serves him, as, given the hype for No Way Home, it wouldn’t surprise me at all if the box office for this gets a big bump from its predecessors’ $677 million worldwide gross back in 2016.

The film, which is set for a May 6th release, has the following synopsis:

In Marvel Studios’ “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,” the MCU unlocks the Multiverse and pushes its boundaries further than ever before. Journey into the unknown with Doctor Strange, who, with the help of mystical allies both old and new, traverses the mind-bending and dangerous alternate realities of the Multiverse to confront a mysterious new adversary.

“Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” stars Benedict Cumberbatch, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Elizabeth Olsen, Benedict Wong, Xochitl Gomez, with Michael Stühlbarg, and Rachel McAdams.

The film is directed by Sam Raimi, and Kevin Feige is the producer. Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso, Eric Hauserman Carroll and Jamie Christopher serve as executive producers. The screenplay was written by Michael Waldron.
