Does Edgar Wright’s Last Night in Soho involve time travel?

Last Night in Soho, Edgar Wright

LAST NIGHT IN SOHO, the next film from Edgar Wright, is a psychological thriller set in London which Wright says has been influenced by both Nicolas Roeg's DON'T LOOK NOW and Roman Polanski's REPULSION. As for what the film is really about, we don't know, but Edgar Wright has revealed some intriguing new details while speaking with Empire, which point to the film perhaps having some sort of time travel component.

Thomasin McKenzie (JOJO RABBIT) plays Eloise in LAST NIGHT IN SOHO, a character who is obsessed with the Swinging Sixties and actually gets to experience them through a mysterious connection with Sandy (Anya Taylor-Joy).

There’s something I have in common with the lead character in that I’m afflicted with nostalgia for a decade I didn’t live in. You think about ‘60s London – what would that be like? Imagine if you knew everything you knew now, and went back. I’m taking a premise whereby you have a character who, in a sort of abstract way, gets to travel in time. And the reality of the decade is maybe not what she imagines. It has an element of 'be careful what you wish for.'

There's a lot to think about there, and LAST NIGHT IN SOHO may not contain literal time travel, but I certainly trust in Edgar Wright to deliver something unique. In addition to Anya Taylor-Joy and Thomasin McKenzie, LAST NIGHT IN SOHO also stars Matt Smith (The Crown), Michael Ajao (ATTACK THE BLOCK), Synnøve Karlsen (Medici), Diana Rigg (Game of Thrones), Terence Stamp (MURDER MYSTERY), and Rita Tushingham (BEING JULIA). "I realised I had never made a film about central London – specifically Soho, somewhere I’ve spent a huge amount of time in the last 25 years," Wright said in a statement when the project was announced. "With Hot Fuzz and Shaun Of The Dead you make movies about places you’ve lived in. This movie is about the London I’ve existed in." LAST NIGHT IN SOHO will hit theaters on September 25, 2020.
