A couple weeks ago, we got our hands on the trailer for Dogman, the latest film from Luc Besson – whose previous credits include The Big Blue, La Femme Nikita, Leon: The Professional, The Fifth Element, The Family, Lucy, and Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets. Besson’s most recent film was the 2019 assassin thriller AnnaDogman will be having its world premiere at the Venice International Film Festival (which is set to run from August 30th through September 9th), and is set to receive a theatrical release in France on September 27th. With those dates drawing near, a poster for the film has arrived online, and you can check it out at the bottom of this article.

Dogman is described as being the incredible story of a child, bruised by life, who finds his salvation through the love of his dogs. According to Deadline, the Dogman himself is said to be “a fragile yet resilient protagonist who bends societal rules as he makes his own way.”

Caleb Landry Jones of Nitram, Get Out, and American Made plays the lead character – and for most of the trailer, it looks like Dogman is going to be a dark drama that digs into the title guy’s traumatic life. But before the trailer wraps up, we get confirmation that this will feature at least a bit of the sort of thrilling sequences Besson is best known for.

The Venice International Film Festival’s Alberto Barbera provided the following statement that confirms this is something different from what we normally expect to see from Besson: “I hope this movie that has convinced us will also convince those spectators and critics who think that Luc Besson only directs action movies, this is much more than that. I am not telling you anything about the plot, it is really surprising, it is a monument to an extraordinary American actor Caleb Landry Jones who makes a performance that will become memorable. You will discover this very soon.

Besson wrote the screenplay for Dogman and produced the film with Virginie Besson-Silla through Luc Besson Production, in association with EuropaCorp – which is another company he founded. EuropaCorp is majority-owned by the asset management firm Vine Alternative Investment Groups. Kinology is handling the international distribution sales and has already secured distribution for Dogman in multiple territories.
