I think I’m one of the few movie geeks out there who is still totally befuddled by DONNIE DARKO’s popularity. I mean, we all enjoy flicks with giant ominous rabbits, but that one left me cold. For some, it’s a modern classic. I dunno, maybe it’s the Swayze…
It goes without saying that I’m quite surprised to find that there’s a DONNIE DARKO 2 in the works. And not only did it just pop up out of nowhere, it’s almost ready to begin filming! According to Screen Daily, it’s called S. DARKO. (SPOILERS HERE if you haven’t seen the first one.) The story picks up seven years after the first film (and Donnie’s death) when little sister Samantha Darko and her best friend Corey are now 18 and on a roadtrip to Los Angeles when they are plagued by bizarre visions.
Original director Richard Kelley is apparently not involved (I’m sure he’s thrilled with the news) and neither is Jake Gyllenhaal. Producer Simon Crowe said: “Donnie’s not in [the new film] but there are meteorites and rabbits.”
Daviegh Chase reprises her role as Donnie’s younger sister. The cast also includes Ed Westwick (100 FEET), Briana Evigan (pictured below), and Justin Chatwin. S. DARKO begins filming on May 18 under the direction of Chris Fisher (RAMPAGE: THE HILLSIDE STRANGLER MURDERS).
