DOOM: Ben Wheatley wants to direct a movie based on the popular game

Last Updated on July 30, 2021

Ben Wheatley is a pretty eclectic filmmaker, having directed a diverse range of films, from the bleak Kill List to the fun Freefire, to his most recent surreal horror flick In the Earth (out now!). Currently, he's on track to direct the mega-budget shark attack sequel Meg 2 starring Jason Statham!

However, when talking to the podcast The Playlist, Wheatley mentioned that he really wants to do is direct a DOOM movie, stating:

I still want to make a Doom film, though. I know it’s been done, but come on.

Now, as he mentions, there already was a DOOM movie which came out in 2005 starring The Rock and Karl Urban, that was not met with much fanfare at the time. But, as he alludes to, there's no reason you couldn't remake it, since it's been over 16 years at this point! Now, to be fair, there was a recent – reportedly disastrous – direct-to-VOD sequel DOOM: Annihilation that came out recently…but if Mortal Kombat could get a big-budget remake after a disastrous sequel with "Annihilation" as its subtitle, DOOM certainly could as well! And the FPS franchise is now more popular than ever (and certainly more than it was back in the mid-2000s)!

Personally, I'd love to see his take on that insane world! And, in fact, he almost got to direct the second Tomb Raider film in that reboot series, so let's hope Wheatley gets his chance to direct a videogame movie at some point like he clearly seems to want to!

But what do you guys think? Fans of DOOM? If so, would you like to see a Wheatley-helmed version of it? Either way, sound off below!
