There is no word on whether we will be getting a new STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS spot during the Super Bowl, but Paramount is promising a surprise for fans who have downloaded the movie’s official app.

The Star Trek App, utilizing the latest technologies from Qualcomm Incorporated, such as Qualcomm Labs’ Gimbal™ platform and Qualcomm Vuforia™ augmented reality platform, will allow users to delve deeper into the Star Trek universe by interacting directly with materials from the eagerly awaited film to unlock additional content and experiences. The users collect points, see content, and work their way through the Star Trek Academy.

Users who download the app on their iPhone or Android device can begin interacting right away. I downloaded it and currently it has you scan images from STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS from magazines or the web as well as listen to the audio from the trailer to unlock content you can save to your phone. One mission even asks you to travel to the site of Starfleet Academy in San Francisco for points.

Paramount is promising an exclusive surprise will be unlocked during the second quarter of the Super Bowl this Sunday. Could it be a trailer? Or a new image? Whatever the case, download the app for free now and have your phone ready during the game.

STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS, starring Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Benedict Cumberbatch, Alice Eve, Anton Yelchin, Bruce Greenwood, John Cho, Karl Urban, Simon Pegg, Peter Weller, and directed by J.J. Abrams, opens on May 22, 2013.
