Dunst climbs a pyramid scheme in On Becoming a God in Central Florida promo

Alexander Skarsgard dons a mullet and wears a tuxedo, and Kirsten Dunst becomes a mermaid and smacks the hell out of people. That’s really all you need to know if you want to get excited about the new Showtime series ON BECOMING A GOD IN CENTRAL FLORIDA, and if you feel like those visuals need to be seen to be believed, then you can watch the first trailer now.

Kicking off the three-minute trailer is Skarsgard narrating his little speech about what it means to be a winner, and from there the trailer just gets wilder and wilder as a cavalcade of bonkers imagery hits the screen – loaded with 90s fashion trends and hairdos. Basically, it feels like you’re on an acid trip in the middle of 90s-era Florida suburbia, and counter to how that really sounds, this looks like one of the most ridiculously entertaining and fascinating shows of 2019.

It looks like Dunst will be turning in some incredible work as Krystal Stubbs, a woman who struggles to make ends meet and decides to work her way up the ranks of the pyramid scheme that kicked her and her family down to the poverty line in the first place. The rest of the cast looks fantastic too, including Skarsgard and his mullet, Théodore Pellerin, Ted Levine, Mel Rodriguez, Beth Ditto and more. Showtime may not quite have the viewer subscription levels as Netflix and HBO, but shows like this give more than enough reason to carve out enough time in your life and room in your budget to watch these actors let loose in 90s-era Florida and scheme their way to the American Dream

Here's the official synopsis:

Set in a small Orlando-adjacent town in 1992, On Becoming a God in Central Florida follows Krystal Stubbs (Dunst), a minimum-wage water park employee who lies, schemes and cons her way up the ranks of Founders American Merchandise (FAM) — the cultish, flag-waving, multibillion-dollar pyramid scheme that drove her to ruin in the first place, run by the powerful Obie Garbeau II (Levine). Determined to make a better life for herself, Krystal dives deep into FAM and develops a tangled relationship with FAM’s most loyal and fanatical follower Cody (Pellerin), until her business begins to affect those closest to her, including Ernie (Rodriguez), her affable water park boss, and his FAM-skeptic wife Bets (Ditto).

ON BECOMING A GOD IN CENTRAL FLORIDA starts on Showtime on August 25.
