It’s been tough as of late to get excited for remakes, since there are coming out left and right. So when I got news of a remake of THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL, I was less than enthusiastic, so forgive me. Apparently the creative minds at Fox thought it would be a good idea to remake the old, old film, and to help them they have enlisted the directing services of Scott Derrickson, who helmed THE EXORCIST OF EMILY ROSE.
If you haven’t seen the film, like me, the plot speaks for itself. I thought Empireonline summed it up nicely: ” The tale of a benign alien, named Klaatu, who comes to Earth – specifically, Washington DC – to warn Man of the error of his ways, to wit: that its increasingly war-like nature is placing the planet in danger of being blown up by a kind of intergalactic UN, the title of the movie refers to what happens when mankind, naturally, decides to ignore the alien’s advice and attack him and his giant killer robot, Gort (which is disarmed by the immortal password, “Klaatu Barada Nikto!”, a phrase that has cropped up in countless places since, from ARMY OF DARKNESS to RETURN OF THE JEDI, where it gave name to three characters on Jabba’s sail barge). Wounded and hiding out with a local family, the alien decides to show the world the full extent of his powers (all for the greater good, you understand)…”
…Like I said, it’s not going to be easy to get excited for this one. I’m sure they’re going to update it a bit and make it edgy with CGI and pump up the SCI-FI level and maybe even tune up the horror aspect of it, but still, that sounds like a load of camp to me. Hopefully it will just be something to laugh at.
