Focus Features has put a bullet in the head of EASTERN PROMISES 2.

Doing the press rounds for his latest film, COSMOPOLIS, David Cronenberg revealed to our brothers in arms JoBlo.com that the long-anticipated sequel to his 2007 gangster drama will not go forward as planned.

“Unfortunately, just recently it fell apart I think for good. It was a disappointment because I literally thought I would be in pre-production on it this October. But it is pretty much dead.”

“You have to talk to James Schamus at Focus to get the details maybe…”

As we haven’t heard about any movement on the film since 2009 (when Cronenberg first said it was moving forward), it doesn’t come as a huge shock. In fact, I’m surprised it took this long to be confirmed. The original film made $56 million worldwide, which isn’t a terrible sum, but those aren’t numbers that automatically greenlight a follow-up.

Truth be told, I don’t mind this development; I personally prefer Cronenberg move on to something new.
