Yesterday, we posted an article about a snazzy new 4K eighties horror SteelBook set coming from Warner Bros. this October. One of the movies mentioned in the set was Frank Oz’s Little Shop of Horrors, which — up to now — had not been available on 4K. Now, we have confirmation that, in addition to being in the box set, it’s getting a standalone 4K Blu-ray release on October 6th, with a scan of a brand-new 4K restoration.
Little Shop of Horrors, directed by Frank Oz, was a film version of the off-Broadway musical, which in turn was based on the 1960 Roger Corman film. Rick Moranis stars as Seymour, a lonely flower shop worker in love with his co-worker, Audrey (Ellen Greene), who is dating an abusive, sadistic dentist (Steve Martin). Seymour comes into the ownership of a mysterious plant he calls Audrey II, which survives on human blood and eventually grows to a massive size, demanding more “food” in the form of Seymour’s enemies.
The movie was only a modest success but developed a cult following, with many of the film’s numbers, including “Suddenly Seymour,” becoming classics. It’s also well-regarded for a single scene where Steve Martin has to deal with a masochistic patient, played by Bill Murray in a classic cameo. The film was also controversial, as the finale was infamously reshot — the original had an apocalyptic ending that didn’t go over well with audiences.
The 4K Blu-ray includes a restoration that features both versions of the film, the director’s cut and the theatrical cut, in 4K Dolby Vision, as well as deleted scenes, commentary by Frank Oz, and two new featurettes examining the film’s legacy 40 years on. Now that Moranis is out of retirement for Spaceballs: The New One, the time seems just right for new audiences to experience one of his classic roles.
