Edgar Wright names his top films of 2014

Last Updated on August 5, 2021

Edgar Wright was supposed to be working on ANT-MAN this year, but things took a turn and he instead has been working on future projects and watching a lot of movies. So, obviously the filmmaker had some favorites and has decided to share them with us.

Speaking with Esquire, Wright claimed there were a great number of independent films this year including flicks like LOCKE, BLUE RUIN, and THE SKELETON TWINS while also decrying the lack of original films thanks to countless blockbuster franchises and sequels out there. So, you will not find any superhero movies in his top films of the year, but you may find some movies on your own favorite list.

Here is Edgar Wright's top films of 2014, presented in no particular order.

BOYHOOD

THE GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL

BIRDMAN

SNOWPIERCER

INTERSTELLAR

NIGHTCRAWLER

UNDER THE SKIN

THE LEGO MOVIE

WHIPLASH

EDGE OF TOMORROW

There are some studio films on that list, one of which is already kickstarting it's own franchise of animated films for kids.  But, the key to all of these movies is originality.  None of Wright's top ten films is like any movie released before it which should go to show that there are still original ideas coming out of Hollywood.  Whether all of these films are worthy of most top ten lists should go without question as well.

Hopefully next year we will be talking about a new Edgar Wright movie to be included on the year end best of lists.  If you would like to read Wright's rationale behind each of his choices, head on over toEsquire.
