So far, Edgar Wright’s SCOTT PILGRIM vs. THE WORLD has been receiving wildly exuberant buzz from the lucky souls to see preview screenings, making the wait until its August release an experiment in torture.
The movie revolves around the Toronto slacker of the title, who splits his time between playing in his band Sex Bob-omb and doing battle with the seven evil exes of his foxy but mysterious new girlfriend, the rollerskating kung-fu courier Ramona.
How closely did Wright follow Bryan O’Malley’s ingenious books (currently one shy of completion)? As he tells MTV, you’ll get a healthy mix of adapted material and fresh ideas.
“It stays pretty true to volumes one and two,” Wright says. “And three. After three volumes, it starts to take its own path, but very much within the spirit of the book — and approved by Bryan as well. … There are some things that are in the film that are actually from Bryan’s original ideas before he wrote the books. [So] there are some things in there that refer to older ideas which he didn’t end up doing.”
“I feel like we tried to respect the books as much as we can in a Hollywood film, but also infuse his ideas that didn’t necessarily fit into the volumes.” (In case you didn’t get the hint, those are volumes you should have on your shelf.)
