Edgar Wright’s Last Night in Soho involves a trip to the ’60s

Up to this point, writer/director Edgar Wright has revealed very little about his upcoming film LAST NIGHT IN SOHO, just saying it's a "straight-up psychological horror thriller" influenced by the likes of DON'T LOOK NOW and REPULSION. Now Empire magazine has been able to get a little more information out of Wright for their 2020 Preview issue.

Wright told Empire that stars Thomasin McKenzie and Anya Taylor-Joy play characters named Eloise and Sandy, and that much of the film takes place in 

the London of the Swinging Sixties; a time period with which Eloise is obsessed and, through a mysterious connection with Sandy, gets to experience.

So there's some kind of time travel going on in this film, but apparently the trip back to the 1960s goes horribly wrong.

Wright said, 

There’s something I have in common with the lead character in that I’m afflicted with nostalgia for a decade I didn’t live in. You think about ‘60s London – what would that be like? Imagine if you knew everything you knew now, and went back. I’m taking a premise whereby you have a character who, in a sort of abstract way, gets to travel in time. And the reality of the decade is maybe not what she imagines. It has an element of ‘be careful what you wish for’."

It's an interesting concept, and I'm certainly familiar with the idea of being nostalgic for past decades. When I was a kid I was all wrapped up in the '60s and '70s, which I completely missed out on, and as I've gotten older I've become more nostalgic for years I actually lived through, the time of my childhood.

We'll see how Eloise's nostalgic journey turns into a horror story when LAST NIGHT IN SOHO reaches theatres on September 25, 2020.

McKenzie and Taylor-Joy's co-stars include Matt Smith, Michael Ajao, Synnøve Karlsen, Diana Rigg, Terence Stamp, and Rita Tushingham. Wright produced the film with Nira Park and Working Title's Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner.
