Cool news for fans of Hellboy AND of movie scores – especially the creepy/haunting/beautiful themes of Danny Elfman: the twisted musician has just been hired to compose the music for Guillermo Del Toro’s HELLBOY 2.
Elfman replaces Marco Beltrami, who had scored all of Del Toro’s American films. No reason was given (schedule problem, or falling out?) but the match of Del Toro and Elfman is made in movie-geek heaven.
Elfman of course has scored a billion movies, most notably all of Tim Burton’s films (BATMAN and EDWARD SCISSORHANDS being highlights), as well as SPIDER-MAN, MEN IN BLACK, HULK… the list goes on.
Here what the big man himself had to say:
Danny Elfman IS going to score HELLBOY II and I feel privileged. I have worked with Marco Beltrami many times and will work with him soon enough but I believe we will have a beautiful score with Elfman, whom I admire greatly (in fact the “Title sequence” music cue had the “Ta-de-dum-ta-de-dum” rhythm by explicit request by me in an attempt to make it kind of Elfmanesque) and with whom I share a dark view of the world.
Don’t know about you, but the “Ta-de-dum-ta-de-dum” is already music to my ears.
Del Toro also mentions that we can expect about 50 different monsters in this new chapter, as opposed to the 8 we saw in the first one, and the ratio of CGI-created creatures to ones created by prosthetics should be about even.
