Elizabeth Banks and Margot Robbie team-up for The Paper Bag Princess

Last Updated on July 30, 2021

It's been quite some time since I last read Robert Munsch, but I absolutely remember "The Paper Bag Princess", and perhaps sometime in the future, I'll be fortunate enough to witness it play out on the big-screen. Universal Pictures has come out on top in a bidding war for the rights to Munsch's book, which Elizabeth Banks is attached to direct. Margot Robbie (I, TONYA) is expected to star in the film, but whether she officially signs on will ultimately come down to script and scheduling. Katie Silberman (SET IT UP) is attached to pen the script. Both Elizabeth Banks and Margot Robbie will also be producing via their respective labels, Brownstone Productions and LuckyChap Entertainment.

If you need a little refresher on the Robert Munsch book, "The Paper Bag Princess" deals with Princess Elizabeth, who is planning on marrying the practically perfect Prince Ronald. However, when a dragon destroys her castle, kidnaps Ronald, and, gasp, burns all her clothes, her only option to to toss on a paper bag and head out to rescue her fiancé. After challenging the dragon to complete a series of tasks which cause him to grow tired and fall asleep, Princess Elizabeth is able to rescue Ronald, who tells her to return when she looks more like a princess. After calling the ungrateful Ronald a bum, Elizabeth dances off into the sunset.

Before Elizabeth Banks tackles THE PAPER BAG PRINCESS, she's set to direct a reboot of CHARLIE'S ANGELS, which Kristen Stewart and Lupita Nyong’o had been in talks to star in just last month. As for Margot Robbie, her Tonya Harding biopic, I, TONYA, received quite a lot of praise following its debut at the Toronto International Film Festival and has even generated a little Oscar buss for Robbie. You'll be able to check out I, TONYA for yourself on December 8, 2017.
