While I never saw Freddy’s Nightmares when it was on, the series has quite the following from fans. So when Robert Englund (Freddy Krueger for you folks who aren’t NOES-inclined) announced that he was going to host a reality show entitled ‘Real Nightmare’, obviously the news caught a lot of people’s attention. Alas, it was not meant to be.
In an interview with Fangoria, Englund breaks the bad news about his show, which was originally scheduled to debut on CBS earlier this year:
“I worked on that all through 2004,” Englund says. “Great people, incredible team; we were all over America, shooting with this skeleton crew, running around. But the only thing the network knows is what they’ve already done, so they kept trying to make it look like ‘Fear Factor’. I wanted to go psychological [instead]. And then they put another reality show on in our time slot; we were supposed to go on last February, nine months ago. That reality show didn’t do well; it wasn’t good and it had nothing to do with our series, but now they don’t want to have another reality show on the air, and we’ll never go on! No one will ever see it.”
What blows my mind is that the studio would spend that much effort and time to get the preliminaries started, and then up and pull the plug. That’s low.
Don’t feel bad for Mr. Englund, though. He’s still busy as ever, with his turn in Tobe Hooper’s contribution to the MASTERS OF HORROR series, and his roles in the upcoming 2001 MANIACS and HEARTSTOPPER. To read the entire interview between Fango and Robert, click here.
