Escape from NY director found?

This will be good news for all you UNDERWORLD fanatics (as well as those who give LIVE FREE OR DIE HARD a pass for having some decent action sequences) – bad news for those who had hoped the ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK remake would be a dark, gritty action nightmare in the tradition of the original: According to IESB, a spy within New Line Cinema is saying Len Wiseman is the frontrunner for the ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK gig. That’s right, the man who regularly spanks Kate Beckinsale’s fanny keeps getting gifts from God.

Not only that, but he’s ALSO supposedly in line to direct GEARS OF WAR – the movie version of a video game I’ve never played, but sure looks cool: it’s about an squadron of soldiers fighting an invading alien army called the Locust Horde. Massive amounts of bullets are expended….

I can’t speak for the GEARS OF WAR news – it doesn’t bother me one way or the other, although the commercial that David Fincher directed for it seemed to indicate he’d be a rather awesome choice for the job. But as for ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK? I dunno. This guy likes his visuals glossy, flashy, over-stylized. I’m not always blindly against such things – but I don’t think this material wants this director.

My choice (not having given it a huge amount of thought) would be Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, who I think kicked all sorts of ass with 28 WEEKS LATER, and could bring an intense, you-are-there perspective to the tale. But I’m not some executive who doesn’t give a crap what the fans of the genre think, am I?

Have a great idea on who should be at the helm of thing thing? Spit a bullet or two below!

Damn you, Wisemaaaaaaaaaan!
