We first reported on the Evil Dead remake here, and the rumors/news are coming fast and furious as you might expect.
The latest concerns the possibility of Seann William Scott taking on the role of Ash. My personal feeling is that it doesn’t matter who the hell you cast. Ash is one of the most beloved characters in genre history, so people who are apoplectic about the remake won’t accept anyone but Bruce Campbell, and folks who are taking a wait and see approach, probably aren’t going to jump on anyone’s bandwagon. That said, if the movie HAS to be remade, and if Ash HAS to be recast, I could see the merits in handing the reins over to Stifler.
In more remake news, there’s been a lot of anger about this project. Personally I share it, though I don’t mind the thought of seeing the tree scene re-done with today’s effects. In the midst of all this heat, I offer you two resources to enjoy. One is an online petition to stop the remake. The other is an article by Johnny Butane over at Dread Central. He makes some good points about the genre community’s ability to tear itself apart. It’s worth a read.
