I remember when the EVIL DEAD remake was initially announced, people were bitching and moaning like hell about it (like they do with all remakes, to be fair). However, when it finally came out, people had to admit – even if they didn't prefer it, or even really like it – that it was still ultimately a well-crafted horror movie that stood on its own. And that was thanks in large part to Uruguayan filmmaker Fede Álvarez who was tasked with directing the film, and whom Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell had handpicked themselves based on his prior work.
So with that film under his belt, as well as his next flick DON'T BREATHE, I'm willing to give whatever project he has next a shot, especially without the expectations of living up to a horror classic. And it seems his next project is going to be the film 16 STATES, from screenwriters John Requa & Glenn Ficarra – who wrote the recent Disney vehicle JUNGLE CRUISE starring The Rock – which Deadline describes as a "road trip during a zombie pandemic"

Now, while I'm not the biggest fan of zombies, I'm always down to see things get reinterpreted or re-examined, and doing a road trip-type film after an apocalypse could be potentially interesting, and has yielded great results before, such as A BOY AND HIS DOG (even though that was a nuclear apocalypse and not a zombie one).
No official release date as of yet (obviously), but the film has been picked up by Lionsgate for distribution.
