Evil Dead Rise: Mia Challis casting news reveals film’s Los Angeles setting

Last Updated on July 30, 2021

We already shared one piece of Evil Dead Rise news this morning, but close on the heels of writer/director Lee Cronin celebrating the fact that the film is six weeks into its twelve week shoot (check out his picture from the set HERE) comes the announcement that Mia Challis has joined the cast – and within that announcement, more plot details have been revealed, including the fact that the movie is set in Los Angeles!

Up to this point, it had only been said that Evil Dead Rise would be set "in the city". Here's the new plot synopsis that confirms "the city" is L.A.:

A road-weary Beth pays an overdue visit to her older sister Ellie, who is raising three kids on her own in a cramped L.A apartment. The sisters’ reunion is cut short by the discovery of a mysterious book deep in the bowels of Ellie’s building, giving rise to flesh-possessing demons, and thrusting Beth into a primal battle for survival as she is faced with the most nightmarish version of motherhood imaginable.

Lily Sullivan and Alyssa Sutherland star as the estranged sisters at the heart of the story. Gabrielle Echols, Morgan Davies, and Nell Fisher play Ellie's three kids.

Mia Challis, star of the web series User Not Found, will be playing Jessica, "an 18 year old girl, who is obsessed with fashion and Instagram. Jessica loves to be the center of attention, although she is smarter than she lets on".

Although set in Los Angeles, Evil Dead Rise is being filmed in New Zealand. A collaboration between Warner Bros., New Line Cinema, and Ghost House Pictures, it's being produced by Robert Tapert and executive produced by Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell. Campbell will not be appearing the film, since he has retired from playing the role of franchise hero Ash on screen.

Romel Adam, John Keville, and Macdara Kelleher are also executive producing.

Evil Dead Rise will be released through the HBO Max streaming service, but a release date has not yet been announced.
