Evil Dead Rise set pics tease Evil Dead 2 Easter egg, bloodshed

Filming continues on Evil Dead Rise, writer/director Lee Cronin's addition to the Evil Dead franchise, and the director's once pristine white shoes are now quite messy. Cronin has been sharing pictures from the set throughout production, and the latest ones reveal not only that the set and Cronin's shoes are getting soaked in blood, they also show off the fact that there's going to be an Evil Dead 2 Easter egg in the film.

Apparently the characters in Evil Dead Rise are going to be eating pizza at some point in the film – presumably before the demonic mayhem kicks in – and the artwork on the pizza box is designed to bring smiles to the faces of Evil Dead 2 fans. Here are the latest pictures shared by Cronin:

Although Evil Dead Rise is filming in New Zealand, the story is set in Los Angeles. The synopsis:

A road-weary Beth pays an overdue visit to her older sister Ellie, who is raising three kids on her own in a cramped L.A apartment. The sisters’ reunion is cut short by the discovery of a mysterious book deep in the bowels of Ellie’s building, giving rise to flesh-possessing demons, and thrusting Beth into a primal battle for survival as she is faced with the most nightmarish version of motherhood imaginable.

Lily Sullivan and Alyssa Sutherland star as the estranged sisters at the heart of the story. Gabrielle Echols, Morgan Davies, and Nell Fisher play Ellie's three kids. Mia Challis is playing Jessica, "an 18 year old girl, who is obsessed with fashion and Instagram. Jessica loves to be the center of attention, although she is smarter than she lets on".

A collaboration between Warner Bros., New Line Cinema, and Ghost House Pictures, Evil Dead Rise is being produced by Robert Tapert and executive produced by Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell. Campbell will not be appearing the film, since he has retired from playing the role of franchise hero Ash on screen. Romel Adam, John Keville, and Macdara Kelleher are also executive producing.

Evil Dead Rise will be released through the HBO Max streaming service, but a release date has not yet been announced.
