Oh for the love of God. From an interview in the Down Under edition of Empire magazine comes news from James G.Robinson, CEO and Chariman of Morgan Creek, that they may develop a TV series out of the EXORCIST. That’s a great idea. Let’s serialize a concept that has been on life-support anyway, and then transfer it to a medium where yummy gore and luscious sex/nudity are severely restricted.
Some may see this as just another obvious money grab, but to me it’s much more insidious than that. See, non-genre fans will often check out horror TV if it’s attached to a name concept. Problem is, while they may not appreciate genre work like we do, they do know outright crap when they see it. So instead of checking out something tight and awesome that inspires them to explore the wondrous world of genre films, they get turned off to the concept again, settling back in the surety that genre work has neither art, thought nor creativity to it!
I freely admit this is a worst-case scenario. Maybe Morgan Creek will churn out an amazing show and the horror community will forever be the better for it. And if so, forgive the cynic in me. But if they f*ck this up, it’d be a slap in the face of genre fans, and they should really think about how much they want to anger a group that feeds off gore and rage like we do.
