Fast Saga: Dwayne Johnson is returning to the Fast & Furious franchise for an untitled film project

After teasing his return to the Fast and Furious franchise in Fast X, Dwayne Johnson is officially returning to the mean streets for an untitled Fast project. Universal and Johnson announced the megastar’s return on Thursday, saying Chris Morgan will write the script for Johnson’s untitled Fast film. Johnson’s return to the Fast franchise will turn heads and garner social media ribbing after the actor previously said he’s through contributing to the money-printing action series.

If Morgan’s name looks familiar, he wrote six of the core Fast and Furious films and the spinoff Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw, starring Johnson and Jason Statham. In addition to reprising the role of Hobbs, Johnson will also produce the untitled Fast project through his Seven Bucks Productions studio alongside Dany Garcia and Hiram Garcia. Vin Diesel also produces, which is a good sign that he and Johnson have mended fences since the duo notoriously parted ways after a nasty public feud. Diesel contributes as a producer alongside Samantha Vincent through their One Race studio. Also producing are Morgan for his Chris Morgan Productions, Jeff Kirschenbaum for Roth/Kirschenbaum Films, and Neal Moritz for Original Film.

Johnson’s untitled Fast project is not a Hobbs & Shaw sequel. Nor is it Fast 11 or Fast 12. According to sources close to the film, the movie bridges Fast X and Fast 11. If you want, think of it as Fast X5. If you’re concerned about casting, fear not. Johnson’s untitled Fast project will star familiar faces from the core series of films.

While nothing is written in stone, Diesel is not expected to star in Johnson’s new Fast movie. Plans could change, but Dominic Toretto has his hands full in the mainline Fast Saga.

In 2016, Diesel and Johnson came to emotional blows while filming Fate of the Furious. Johnson repeatedly said his time as Luke Hobbs had ended as time marched on. “I wish them well on Fast 9. And I wish them the best of luck on Fast 10 and Fast 11 and the rest of the Fast & Furious movies they do that will be without me,” Johnson said in 2021.

Diesel tried to court Johnson back to the franchise with a public appeal, but Johnson said there was “no chance” he’d return. “I privately spoke with my partners at Universal as well, all of whom were very supportive as they understand the problem,” Johnson said about keeping his distance from the Fast Saga.

Thankfully, all the drama has a happy ending. In a social media post, Johnson wrote the following about his Fast status and making nice with Diesel for the sake of family:

“Last summer Vin and I put all the past behind us. We’ll lead with brotherhood and resolve – and always take care of the franchise, characters & FANS that we love,” wrote Johnson.
