Fear Street: Chloe Okuno to direct R.L. Stine sequel for Netflix

Director Leigh Janiak and the Netflix streaming service brought us a really fun horror event back in the summer of 2021 with the Fear Street trilogy. Three films that were filming back-to-back-to-back and then released over the course of three weeks – those films being Fear Street Part One: 1994, Fear Street Part Two: 1978, and Fear Street Part Three: 1666. There was always a chance that Fear Street would continue beyond the trilogy, as author R.L. Stine has written over 100 books that have been published under the various Fear Street banners. And now Above the Line has confirmed that another Fear Street movie is in the works at Netflix. This one is set to be directed by Chloe Okuno, who recently made her feature directorial debut with the thriller Watcher, starring Maika Monroe.

Okuno also directed the Storm Drain segment of V/H/S/94 and an episode of Showtime’s Let the Right One In series.

We don’t know yet if Leigh Janiak is going to be involved with the new Fear Street movie in any way. After her trilogy was released, she told IndieWire, “One of the exciting things about Fear Street is the fact that the universe is big and allows for a lot of space. One of the things that I talked about before I was hired was that we have a potential here to create a horror Marvel [Cinematic Universe], where you can have slasher killers from lots of different eras. You have the canon of our main mythology that’s built around the fact that the devil lives in Shadyside, so there’s also room for everything else. … I think that my hope is that audiences like it enough that we can start building out [more], we can think about what another trilogy would be, what stand-alones would be, what TV would be. I don’t even think about it like TV or movies exactly anymore. That’s the great thing about Netflix and about what Fear Street is, which is kind of a hybrid new thing. I’m excited about the possibility of what else can happen.

She even mentioned that she would like to see a Fear Street movie that would be a slasher set in the 1950s… Which is something I would definitely like to see as well.

The three Fear Street movies we got last year had the following synopses:

Fear Street Part One: 1994 – A circle of teenage friends accidentally encounter the ancient evil responsible for a series of brutal murders that have plagued their town for over 300 years.

Fear Street Part Two: 1978 – Shadyside, 1978. School’s out for summer and the activities at Camp Nightwing are about to begin. But when another Shadysider is possessed with the urge to kill, the fun in the sun becomes a gruesome fight for survival.

Fear Street Part Three: 1666 – The origins of Sarah Fier’s curse are finally revealed as history comes full circle on a night that changes the lives of Shadysiders forever.

Are you glad to hear there’s going to be another Fear Street movie? What do you think about Chloe Okuno signing on to direct it? Share your thoughts on this one by leaving a comment below.
