First Alice pics

Anybody seen my smoking caterpillar? No, I am not making some sort of innuendo-type reference. It’s just my segway into the following article about Tim Burton’s forthcoming, dark retelling of ALICE IN WONDERLAND. Just the other day, Jared P. passed on the knowledge that Burton-staple, Johnny Depp, has signed on the dotted line to bring to life the Mad Hatter. Now today we have our first set of pics from the flick (above and below)!

That appears to be star, Mia Wasikowska (who is playing “Alice”) standing aboard some type of ship up top. There’s the back of her below taking some direction from Mr. Burton. For some more, click here. I know the pics don’t reveal a whole lot else, yet I’m still strangely intrigued by ’em. Maybe it’s the colors or the look on Ms. Wasikowska’s face or the fact that I know it’s a Burton movie, but something tells me that we are going to be receiving one interesting finished product. Maybe it’s because I’ve enjoyed every single Burton/Depp outing so far (even WILLY WONKA).

I don’t really need to spell out the plot for ALICE IN WONDERLAND, do I? You know, the girl follows a “very late” rabbit down a hole and winds up in a weird, trippy world with talking animals and playing cards. Perhaps Burton’s update will be a tad different. Apparently, it will combine performance-capture imagery, currently seen in BEOWULF, with live-action footage. Could make for some interesting shit.

ALICE is set to release on March 5, 2010. It will also star Matt Lucas as Tweedledee and Tweedledum.
