The first poster for the upcoming DC Comics movie Blue Beetle has been unveiled at the Comic Con Experience in Brazil. There had been no indication that there would be activity for the movie at this year’s CCXP, so this was a major surprise for attendees.

The poster depicts the scarab that gives Jaime Reyes his power. and transforms him into the titular superhero, which seems to line up nicely with set photos that highlighted the costume. DC also tweeted the poster earlier today. Check out the poster below:

Directed by Angel Manuel Soto, Blue Beetle stars Xolo Maridueña as Jaime Reyes/Blue Beetle, Bruna Marquezine as love interest Penny, Belissa Escobedo as sister Milagros, George Lopez as Jaime’s uncle, and Susan Sarandon as main villain Victoria Kord, replacing Sharon Stone. This will be a huge role for Maridueña, best known for his role on Netflix’s Cobra Kai.

Blue Beetle was originally intended to be released on the HBO Max streaming service but was granted a theatrical release last year, suggesting Warner Bros. has far more confidence in the project than, say, Batgirl

As per DC, “The most recent Blue Beetle is Jaime Reyes, a teenager from El Paso, Texas who bonded with Dan Garrett’s Scarab. The artifact gave him incredible alien armor which he used to defend his hometown from all manner of metahuman criminals.” Additionally, “A Blue Beetle has been a part of the superhero community in the DC Universe in some form since 1939, serving both as a solo adventurer and as a part of teams like the Justice League and the Teen Titans, creating one of the greatest heroic legacies in the DCU.”

Blue Beetle will be one of four DC Extended Universe movies released in 2023, along with Shazam! Fury of the Gods, The Flash and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. Blue Beetle hits theaters on August 18th, 2023.
