First teaser for HBO’s The Leftovers, starring Justin Theroux

While the return of HBO’s Game of Thrones has given most of us uber fans a sigh of relief in the wake of True Detective ending, there are still a few more shows on the horizon that will be vying for your attention in the coming months. One of the more appealing shows on that list is The Leftovers, which is based on the novel by Tom Perrotta (ELECTION, LITTLE CHILDREN). The premise is simple: How do people deal with the sudden loss of people in their community to The Rapture? Perrotta is adapting his novel with Lost’s Damon Lindelof and it stars Justin Theroux, Amy Brennaman, Carrie Coon, Christopher Eccleston, Ann Dowd, Amanda Warren, Liv Tyler, and Michael Gaston. Today, we have a look at the teaser for the show, which looks damn compelling.

Take a look:

Here’s the synopsis:

Based on the bestselling novel by Tom Perrotta, ‘The Leftovers’ follows Kevin Garvey, a father of two and the chief of police in a small New York suburb, as he tries to maintain some semblance of normalcy when the notion no longer applies.

Unlike the “Left Behind” series by Tim LaHaye and Jerry B. Jenkins (which is currently being remade into a feature with Nicolas Cage), this is a dramatic look at The Rapture, seemingly without the full biblical tale of everything in the Book of Revelations, focusing on the people affected by the sudden disappearance of their family and friends. Skipping over the religious aspects, I think this opens the doors for some really great storytelling about people dealing with an unexplainable crisis and I’m more intrigued that it’s from both Perrotta and Lindelof, two writers who have delivered some very thought-provoking works throughout their careers. If this is anything close to what they’ve done before, then I think we’re in for some captivating (and possibly frustrating) television.

The Leftovers stars it’s 10-episode first season on HBO on June 15, 2014.
