The first teaser trailer for the David Michôd Aussie thriller THE ROVER has arrived. Starring Guy Pearce, Robert Pattinson, and Scoot McNairy, the “MAD MAX-esque” thriller is scripted by Michôd and actor Joel Edgerton who previously worked together on the crime pic ANIMAL KINGDOM, which has gained a bit of a cult following of late, building the anticipation of THE ROVER that much more. From the looks of it, the film will likely gather a similar following if it delivers on what may be a cool, gritty thriller.

Take a look:

Here’s the synopsis:

A loner tracks the gang who stole his car from a desolate town in the Australian outback with the forced assistance of a wounded guy left behind in the wake of the theft.

I’ve yet to see ANIMAL KINGDOM, but it’s on my list. Pearce is always watchable and the post-apocalyptic setting should add a nice layer of tension. Most eyes will be on Pattinson to see if he’s shed his TWILIGHT persona in favor of something more appealing to mass audiences. After a decent turn in David Cronenberg‘s COSMOPOLIS, this could very well be the film that helps distance him from the stigma of the tween franchise and put him on a new path. We’ll see.

THE ROVER starts roving into theaters summer 2014 (no exact date set yet).
