Foundation TV series: Isaac Asimov adaptation gets a proper trailer

Last Updated on July 30, 2021

Every streaming TV service needs a signature show, and Apple TV is betting big on their upcoming adaptation of Isaac Asimov's classic literary franchise Foundation. Before passing away in 1992, Asimov wrote seven Foundation novels and many more set within the franchise's established universe, so Apple's got a lot of material to adapt if the show turns out to be a success. Indeed, judging by the epic trailer Apple put out today, they've put a ton of money into making this the next big sci-fi franchise. Chernobyl's Jared Harris stars as Hari Seldon, who, in the books, only makes limited appearances throughout but seems to be the protagonist here, suggesting the books have only been used as inspiration rather than making this a straight adaptation.

According to the official synopsis:

When revolutionary Dr. Hari Seldon predicts the impending fall of the Empire, he and a band of loyal followers venture to the far reaches of the galaxy to establish The Foundation in an attempt to rebuild and preserve the future of civilization. But, enraged by Hari's claims, the ruling Cleons — a long line of emperor clones — fear their grasp on the galaxy may be weakening as they're forced to reckon with the potential reality of losing their legacy forever.

Starring Emmy Award nominees Jared Harris and Lee Pace, alongside rising stars Lou Lobell and Leah Harvey, this monumental journey chronicles the stories of four crucial individuals transcending space and time as they overcome deadly crises, shifting loyalties, and complicated relationships that will ultimately determine the fate of humanity. The Apple Original drama also stars Laura Birn, Terrence Mann, Cassian Bilton, and Alfred Enoch.

David S. Goyer (Man of Steel, Batman Begins) is the showrunner. Foundation is set to debut on Apple TV on September 24th
