Francesc Morales (director of the uber-weird HUMANIMAL, which we’ve written about a few times) is in the process of working on APIO VERDE (translation: Celery Green), which sounds like a plenty disturbing drama revolving around the touchy issue of abortion.
The subject is an especially hot topic in Morales’ native country of Chile, where therapeutic abortion is illegal; meaning abortion isn’t allowed even after a medical diagnosis has determined the fetus will eventually be born with a severe or inoperable medical disorder. Certainly material ripe for controversy, wouldn’t you agree?
Via Screen Daily, we learn that Catherine Mazoyer stars in the story of a young woman waiting to give birth to a son with a terminal disease. In an article in Tu Medio magazine, Morales expands a bit on the plot (forgive the rough translation): “The film focuses on a woman who learns that his son will die at birth to live months of agony, which leads her to confront the problems she has avoided all his life. It is a psychological thriller that focuses on the prohibition of therapeutic abortion in our country is not only an attack on our human rights but also leads to violent situations that can drive anyone mad. “
The shoot, which is on location in Santiago and Valparaiso, will wrap in mid-December. In addition to Mazoyer, APIO VERDE stars Cristian Gajardo, Catalina Aguayo, Andres Gomez, Teresita Reyes, Carolina Paulsen, Sonia Mena, Ramon Llao, Jenny Cavallo, Pamela Leiva, Inigo Urrutia and Gregory Cohen.
