Since Mary Shelley’s novel, the story of Dr. Frankenstein and his monster has been played out on screen in a number of different ways, from Boris Karloff to Robert DeNiro. And now, thanks to Hollywood, we’re gonna see the romantic comedy side of the big lug….
According to Variety, Fox 2000 and Radar Pictures have singed Kevin Lima to direct the upcoming romantic comedy with a horrorific spin FRANK, based on Shelley’s classic tale. Lima directed ENCHANTED. I’ll just leave it at that.
Specifically, FRANK goes like this: a teenage prodigy on the cutting edge of cell research in medical school and is encouraged by her guidance counselor to take a break from the lab and make some friends. After several unsuccessful attempts at socializing with her peers, she decides to use her scientific prowess and piece together a friend out of the med school’s instructional cadavers.
The twist? It’s a chick (named Frank? hmmm…). And the romantic object of her affection? The monster. Hmmm. It’s so WTF worthy that I don’t even know where to begin. The story of Frankenstein can be told quite well through comedy, just see Mel Brooks’ YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN or even THE MONSTER SQUAD. But this? This may be taking it too far.
Some could say it’s an original spin on the classic story, and I’ll give it that… but it’s also just a lame rip-off of the classic story as well. Should be interesting to see how it turns out. Stick around as we may (or may not) continue to cover this horrorific romantic comedy.
