Frankenstein is back! Dean Koontz’s novels being adapted by 1019 Entertainment

You read it right folks, FRANKENSTEIN returns!

Some big news out of Variety has it that Ralph Winter and Terry Botwick are in line to acquire the rights to adapt Dean Koontz’s “Frankenstein” for their production company 1019 Entertainment. Not only that, they’re already thinking franchise!

“These books have enough twists and turns to keep the public coming back to the theaters for many years to come,” say Winter and Botwick.

For those uninitiated with Koontz’s already published trio of “Frankenstein” yarns (“Prodigal Son,” “City of Night,” and “Dead and Alive”), the through-line centers on a socially prominent and successful businessman — and his super-human original creation Deucalion in modern-day New Orleans. The story centers on a pair of street-smart detectives who encounter Deucalion while investigating a murder, leading them to a bizarre array of “engineered” humans.

Frankenstein in New Orleans has a pretty dope vibe coming off it, wouldn’t ya say?!?

And I suppose it was only inevitable we get a FRANKENSTEIN update. The last mainstream rendition came back in 1994 with Kenneth Branagh’s version, and given THE WOLFMAN and DRACULA being resuscitated, a modern take on yet another classic horror icon only seems fitting. Besides, they make for a nice counterbalance to the spate of torture-porn outings, zombie flicks, stalk-&-slash templates, etc. etc. I’ll have to wait and see what kind of talent becomes attached, but at this point…count me in!

And in case you thought a trilogy of books was enough to call it a day…think again. A 4th book entitled “Lost Souls” is due June 22nd, with a 5th and 6th edition slated for 2011 and 2012, respectively.
