Free Guy first reactions hail the film as joyful & full of surprises

Free Guy, Ryan Reynolds

It's no secret that we here at JoBlo have plenty of love for Ryan Reynolds, and although the handsome, charismatic bastard doesn't need another win under his belt, it would seem that his latest film is a real audience-pleaser. After experiencing several delays due to COVID-19 — not to mention shifting studios when Disney acquired 20th Century Fox — Free Guy will finally hit theaters next month. The first reactions to the film dropped earlier this morning, with most hailing it as one of the biggest surprises of the year.

I think we could all use something fun and heartwarming right about now, and it sounds like Free Guy will scratch that particular itch just perfectly. The Shawn Levy films stars Ryan Reynolds as a bank teller who discovers that he's actually a background player in an open-world video game and decides to become the hero of his own story. Free Guy also stars Jodie Comer, Lil Rel Howery, Utkarsh Ambudkar, Joe Keery, Taika Waititi, Camille Kostek, and more. Free Guy will debut in theaters on August 13, 2021.
