Friday the 13th: Corey Feldman says legal issue is resolved, pitches sequel

Last Updated on July 30, 2021

For years, Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter (watch it HERE) star Corey Feldman has been saying he wants to return to the franchise for a rematch between his character Tommy Jarvis and the iconic, hockey masked slasher Jason Voorhees. For the last few years, the Friday the 13th brand has gone dormant due to a legal battle between the original film's director Sean S. Cunningham and screenwriter Victor Miller, who is seeking to obtain the U.S. copyright to the first Friday the 13th. But according to Feldman, the rights issue has been resolved – and as far as he's concerned, that means the time is right to get to work on a new "Tommy vs. Jason" movie!

Speaking with Movieweb, Feldman said,

Interestingly enough, some guy came up to me at a party, this is true, two weeks ago, and said he has resolved the rights issues. He's a lawyer, and he has resolved the rights issues around Friday the 13th, and that things are working out, and now they'll be able to start making Friday the 13th movies again."

Feldman says that he and Final Chapter writer Barney Cohen have put together a treatment for the Tommy / Jason rematch, and he had even been talking to production company Platinum Dunes about bringing Tommy back before they made Friday the 13th 2009. Feldman felt the '09 film was a mistake because

they had been meeting with me about doing Tommy vs. Jason, like H20 style. That was the plan… They didn't go that route and they went and did this awful atrocity of a reboot instead and look what you got… Not to talk badly about Platinum Dunes, but I had met with them prior to making that movie and they had promised me that they were going to use me and bring Tommy Jarvis back in the version that they had originally planned to make, and then that all got scratched for that ridiculous whatever-it-was."

Feldman isn't even asking to reprise the role of Tommy Jarvis for multiple films like Jamie Lee Curtis returning to the Halloween franchise, he'd be happy to have just one more shot at Jason.

If they were doing things the right way and they were listening to what the fans really want, and they had their ear to the ground and the pulse of what's going on in pop culture society, what they should do is revamp the idea of bringing Tommy back [40] years later to go up against his nemesis the same way they did with Jamie Lee Curtis and the Halloween reboot. Now, of course they've taken that idea and redone that five different ways… Well, all we're asking for is one, one Tommy vs. Jason sequel. That's all we're asking for."

Feldman isn't the only actor who has played Tommy Jarvis over the years. When he was too busy working on The Goonies to star in Friday the 13th: A New Beginning, he had to pass the role over to John Shepherd. Then Thom Mathews was brought in to play the character in Jason Lives: Friday the 13th Part VI (and has since reprised the role for fan films and the recent Friday the 13th video game).
