Swashbuckling robots? I don’t know what to think about that concept, but according to Deadline.com, J.J. Abrams and two of his “Fringe” writers – Monica Breen and Alison Schapker – are keen on the idea, as the three are currently working on a secret project about just that.

Going under the title ZANBATO, the script- which is set up at Abrams’ home, Paramount – involves Japanese history and robotics: “swashbuckling robots with swords” is how one insider describes it.

Breen and Schapker both worked on the Abrams-supervised shows “Alias” and “Lost” and currently write for “Fringe”. Abrams has shown in the past that he’s willing to shepherd his TV writers into the movie realm (look at the careers he’s helped establish for Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci), so maybe these ladies are the next big writing team to watch.

Meanwhile, we hope to hear more about this strange project soon.
