“Wow, Mike’s doing a story about the MY BLOODY VALENTINE remake!” the AITH regular reader gasps. “I thought he’d never even heard of this movie!” Oh, you could just cut the sarcasm with a knife, can’t you? Or perhaps you’d prefer a pick-axe. Either way, I’m very happy to report some new MY BLOODY VALENTINE 3-D news to you in addition to my previous post. We’ve got the flick’s full synopsis. First take a look, then I’ll discuss:
Ten years ago, a tragedy changed the town of Harmony forever. Tom Hanniger, an inexperienced coal miner, caused an accident in the tunnels that trapped and killed five men and sent the only survivor, Harry Warden, into a permanent coma. But Harry Warden wanted revenge. Exactly one year later, on Valentine’s Day, he woke up…and brutally murdered twenty-two people with a pickaxe before being killed.
Ten years later, Tom Hanniger (Jensen Ackles) returns to Harmony on Valentine’s Day, still haunted by the deaths he caused. Struggling to make amends with his past, he grapples with unresolved feelings for his ex-girlfriend, Sarah (Jaime King, below), who is now married to his best friend, Axel (Kerr Smith), the town sheriff. But tonight, after years of peace, something from Harmony’s dark past has returned. Wearing a miner’s mask and armed with a pickaxe, an unstoppable killer is on the loose. And as his footsteps come ever closer, Tom, Sarah and Axel realize in terror that it just might be Harry Warden who’s come back to claim them.
Okay, first of all, I’m glad that the plot isn’t an exact replica of the original. In fact, the remake’s premise even seems a little more efficient. I like that fact that it takes place only ten years after the killing and links one of the main characters directly to the accident. The original featured a 20-year gap with nobody responsible for the accident still around. I also like having Tom’s ex-girlfriend now married to Axel (which didn’t happen in the original either). And Axel also wasn’t the sheriff.
All in all, VALENTINE 3-D seems to be shaping up as a worthy update of a classic 80’s horror (as I expected). My heart is aching for some good, gory, horror-homage fun! I hope director Patrick Lussier is ready to deliver. And you can bet your box of chocolate candy I’ll be raring to report on future BLOODY updates!
