So, there’s this new trailer for GAMBIT, starring Colin Firth, Alan Rickman, Cameron Diaz, and Stanley Tucci.  It’s written by Joel and Ethan Coen, which would normally cause me to raise my eyebrows and nod with approval, but after watching this trailer I can only furrow and wince.  I like Colin Firth, love Alan Rickman, and enjoy seeing Cameron Diaz without clothing, but this kitschy, boring trailer does nothing to stoke my interest.  I suppose fans of the original 1966 film, starring Michael Caine and Shirley MacLaine, may have some interest in seeing an updated version, but I think newcomers would be hard pressed to get any blood pumping for this.

Yawn.  Here.  Have a look:

Again, some good talent here, but it seems they’ve all been put to bad use.  Perhaps some will find enjoyment out of the whimsical caper, but I don’t foresee this shattering the box office.  Perhaps if the Coen Brothers had directed and added a little more of their comicly dark violence and subject matter it would be better off, but under director Michael Hoffman’s (ONE FINE DAY) lens it seems a bit too light and fluffy.

Here’s the synopsis:

An art curator decides to seek revenge on his abusive boss by conning him into buying a fake Monet, but his plan requires the help of an eccentric and unpredictable Texas rodeo queen

GAMBIT (not to be confused with Marvel’s Cajun X-Man) is set for release on November 21, 2012 in the UK and will hit U.S. shores sometime in 2013.

Oh, and here’s a trailer for the 1966 original…of which I’d rather see…
