INTRO:
How do you feel about Tarantino’s action movies? Do you like Kill Bill? Do
you like the idea of a game based on and heavily influenced by the
Grindhouse era of films? Well, here we have it as Wet plops onto shelves
with buckets of stylized action and a unique outlook that hasn’t been seen
by videogames as of yet. The question is, is it any fun to play a grindhouse
game, or should they stay on the screen?
interested: Rubi is a problem fixer. She fixes problems. She’s good at it. But
when she agrees to fix a wealthy man’s problem by finding and bringing back his
wayward son, she thinks it’s all going to be cut and dry. She thought wrong. The
job wasn’t so simple. And the man who hired her isn’t who he appears to be. Now
Rubi’s on the run, needing to find the man who left her for dead, leaving a
massive body count in her wake. Double-crosses. Enemies. Allies. Guns. Swords.
Drugs. Old books. In an adventure that spans three continents, two warring
factions, and one very agitated problem fixer, WET keeps the adrenaline pumping
from start to finish.
We’ll see about that.
GAMEPLAY:
When I fired this game up, I was pumped. I love Kill Bill and I think that
the old grind movies are pure entertainment. How could this not be great?
Well, it definitely has its moments, but Wet fails to deliver for the whole
game. Here’s my main gripe with this one: it’s really, really cool and heavy
on style but everything that is cool about this game is accomplished within
the first half an hour or so of playing.
runs, and there isn’t a ton to the game other than that. If you just run and
shoot, you’ll miss a lot, but when you do a super cool flip or something, the
game slows down to let you kill your foes. Do you like killing bad guys a lot?
Do you like doing it in slow motion? This game is going to rock your ass off
then. I also hope you like somewhat awkward platforming because there’s a fair
amount of it in this one too. Sometimes you’ll be in entire arenas where you
have to kill hundreds of dudes, and sometimes you go into ‘rage’ mode where the
screen turns a cool color of red and you..kill more dudes.
a few objectives and lets you have at it. There’s also special stages when you
are running over cars or grabbing for a parachute while plummeting to your
death, but these add-ons can be really wonky and tough to beat because the AI
gets really, really unfair after awhile. However, they’re nice breaks for what
seems to get old, running around and slowly killing dudes. There’s a lot of
problems with the camera, it chooses bizarre angles for you to deal with from
time to time.
Ultimately, Wet isn’t a terrible game, as long as you like the old movies it
pays homage to and also like to kill lots of dudes. If you don’t like killing
dudes very slowly, then you probably won’t like this game. Add to this some
poorly executed add-on stages and some annoying ‘watch the cutscene but press
the right button NOW’ sequences, and you have a game that will likely end up
being a rental for most.

GRAPHICS:
Wet certainly tries to look like its inspiration, and has a scratchy old
grainy look to it. Sure, all the henchmen look the same but that doesn’t
mean that this game is short on style- it’s big on style. There’s a lot of
little effects, and rage mode can be pretty fun the first few times you
experience it. You certainly FEEL like you’re playing a Tarantino flick. Wet
is a full on blast to watch.

AUDIO:
The sound is also fantastic in this game, with a great soundtrack and some
good sound effects. The voice acting is awful, but I’m not sure if that is
intentional or not. With that being said, the pumping soundtrack is perfect
and very fitting for the game. Rockabilly is great!

FINAL VERDICT:
At the end of the day, Wet does tend to misfire a bit with its gameplay.
That doesn’t make it a total failure though, because it seems to succeed as
an homage to the films of its era. You get missing reels, strange
characters, a great soundtrack, fake commercials and even midgets. I had fun
with Wet, but the gameplay unfortunately is the weakest link. How much fun
you’ll have is likely dependent on your enjoyment of the subject matter, and
your patience as a gamer.
