Genre rules B.O.

Well howdy-ho, we’ve got TWO genre-centric titles resting atop of the box office! Holding strong at number 1 for the third straight week was, of course, the movie of the summer, of the year, of the millennium, THE DARK KNIGHT. Christopher Nolan’s masterpiece brought in another $42.6 million for a record-setting grand total of $393,751,065. This week it will become the fastest film to reach the $400 million mark ever!

Coming in at a very close second was THE MUMMY: TOMB OF THE DRAGON EMPEROR, which overcame soul-sucking reviews to amass $40.4 million for its first weekend. It’s still the lowest opening tally for any of THE MUMMY films. Whatever, I ain’t seeing it.

And lastly, believe it or not, there was one more surprising genre-centric flick that made money this weekend, though it didn’t even come close to cracking the top ten. Said flick was our beloved MIDNIGHT MEAT TRAIN, which after its numerous release date trials and tribulations, brought in just over $34,000. However, as Jared P. told you all here, Lionsgate only released TRAIN on a miniscule 102 screens and those screens just so happened to reside within extreme “bargain” theaters that charge only about $1 or $2. Sound like a fair deal? Hell f*cking no! But I’m through with arguing. Let’s just rush out the DVD so I can finally see the damn thing!

Great poster.
