Deadline has reported that HBO has cancelled Gentleman Jack after two seasons. The drama series created and written by Sally Wainwright based on the life of Anne Lister, a landowner and industrialist who documented a lifetime of lesbian relationships in her coded diaries.
“HBO will not be moving forward with a third season of Gentleman Jack,” the network said in a statement to Deadline. “When we began this journey more than five years ago, we knew the series’ creator Sally Wainwright had a uniquely compelling vision, and it’s been tremendously gratifying to see how Anne Lister’s journey has resonated with viewers. We are incredibly grateful to Sally, to the impeccable Suranne Jones and Sophie Rundle, and to the entire cast and crew for bringing Anne and Ann’s story to life. We’d also like to thank our partners at BBC and Lookout Point for their collaboration on two remarkable seasons.” Gentleman Jack starred Suranne Jones as Anne Lister and Sophie Rundle as Ann Walker. The second season concluded just last month and followed Anne and Ann as they made their home at Shibden Hall with the intention of combing their estates and becoming a power couple.
The first season of Gentleman Jack debuted on HBO in the U.S. and on BBC One in the U.K back in 2019. The second season was delayed by the pandemic and when it finally returned, it was one of HBO’s lower-rated projects. In addition to Gentleman Jack, HBO also recently cancelled The Time Traveler’s Wife, an adaptation of the best-selling novel by Audrey Niffenegger.
