We have known since MAD MAX: FURY ROAD was released in 2015 that MAD MAX franchise creator George Miller had at least one more Mad Max movie in mind, one that could be titled MAD MAX: THE WASTELAND. But when Miller's company Kennedy Miller Mitchell filed a lawsuit against Warner Bros., which has been involved with the franchise since the beginning, over unpaid FURY ROAD earnings a couple years ago, it could have killed any chance of Miller and the studio working together on future sequels.
Thankfully, that doesn't seem to be the case. Speaking to IndieWire, Miller said that the legal issue between his company and WB appears to be getting close to a positive resolution.
It all started because of the chaos at Warner Bros. and not Kevin Tsujihara, it was pre all that. He wasn’t the antagonist, because a lot of people didn’t know what was going on and were not prepared to make a definitive stand; everybody was running around fearful, it seems, through three regimes. It was hard to get anyone’s attention, so we went to litigation. The chaos has stabilized and it’s become extremely positive as the dust seems to have settled after [the AT&T merger].
Once the issue is resolved, Miller is ready to get back to work on FURY ROAD follow-ups:
There are two stories, both involving Mad Max, and also a Furiosa story. We’re still solving, we’ve got to play out the Warners thing, it seems to be pretty clear that it’s going to happen.
Two more MAD MAX movies and a FURIOSA spin-off? That would be an ambitious slate for anyone, let alone a filmmaker who is already 74 years old, but if Miller can pull this off I'll be glad to watch every one of them.
While things are worked out with Warner Bros., Miller is preparing to go into production on a romantic epic called THREE THOUSAND YEARS OF LONGING, starring Idris Elba and Tilda Swinton. If all goes according to plan, filming on THREE THOUSAND YEARS OF LONGING should begin in early 2020.
