Ghostbusters: Jason Reitman executive producing new animated series for Netflix

The Netflix streaming service has just announced that Ghostbusters: Afterlife writer/director Jason Reitman and his co-writer Gil Kenan are executive producing a new Ghostbusters animated series for them! This announcement comes at the perfect time, because June 8th happens to be Ghostbusters Day, since that’s when the original Ghostbusters movie was released in 1984.

Details on this new animated series are being kept under wraps at the moment, but Netflix let it be known that

Netflix and Sony Pictures Animation are in development on an all-new animated series based on the beloved Ghostbusters IP, which will be debuted exclusively on Netflix. Production will be in conjunction with Ghost Corps, Inc. Jason Reitman and Gil Kenan, the minds behind Ghostbusters: Afterlife and the future of Ghost Corps, are attached to the series as Executive Producers. The series is part of the expanding Ghostbusters universe, which began with Ivan Reitman’s Ghostbusters in 1984 and has since become a mega-pop culture phenomenon culminating in last year’s Ghostbusters: Afterlife.

For now we can only wonder which Ghostbusters characters this show might center on. The original characters? The characters from Ghostbusters: Afterlife, with appearances by the original characters? We’ll have to wait and see.

Ghostbusters: Afterlife starred Carrie Coon, Finn Wolfhard, and Mckenna Grace as

a family with single mom Callie and her two kids, Trevor and Phoebe, who move into a beaten-down farmhouse in Oklahoma only to discover that there’s something strange in the neighborhood. Unexplained quakes shake the town. There’s an old mine nearby that bears the name of Ivo Shandor, who built the Manhattan high-rise in the 1984 film that channeled the forces of evil.

Paul Rudd played “a local teacher who’s been documenting the unexplained phenomena, befriending Callie and her kids, and helping make the connection between the current weirdness and the events of three decades before”. Also in the cast were Bokeem Woodbine, Tracy Letts, Olivia Wilde, Bob Gunton, and Oliver Cooper, with Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, Sigourney Weaver, and Annie Potts reprising their roles from the first two films.

Jason Reitman’s father Ivan Reitman, who directed the first two movies, produced Ghostbusters: Afterlife, with Aykroyd serving as executive producer alongside Jason Blumenfeld, Michael Beugg, Aaron L. Gilbert, Jason Cloth, and Kenan. Sadly, Ivan Reitman passed away soon after the release of the film.
