God of War TV series to officially unleash pandemonium at Amazon

God of War, TV series, Amazon

Boy! Amazon is putting plenty of firepower behind its God of War TV series. According to reports, Wheel of Time showrunner Rafe Judkins and The Expanse creators Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby are adapting the award-winning Playstation game. Fergus and Ostby will write the series and executive produce alongside Judkins.

The God of War series revolves around Kratos, the demigod son of Zeus, and a mortal woman named Callisto. After exacting vengeance against the Gods of Olympus, Kratos now lives as a man in the realm of Norse Gods and monsters. In this harsh, unforgiving world, he must fight to survive and teach his son to do the same.

God of War is a compelling, character-driven franchise that we believe will captivate our global customers as much with its expansive and immersive worlds as its rich storytelling,” Vernon Sanders, head of global television at Amazon Studios, said in a statement. “We are honored to share in the adventure of exploring the God of War mythology in such a momentous way with Sony Pictures Television, PlayStation Productions and [game developer] Santa Monica Studio.”

In development since March, God of War will follow Kratos, the God of War, who retires himself from his chaotic past in ancient Greece and sets his weapons aside forever in the Norse realm of Midgard. “When his beloved wife dies,” the show’s description reads, “Kratos sets off on a dangerous journey with his estranged son to spread her ashes from the highest peak — his wife’s final wish. Kratos soon realizes the journey is an epic quest in disguise, one which will test the bonds between father and son and force Kratos to battle new gods and monsters for the fate of the world.”

Universally beloved by gamers of all kinds, the God of War series began on Sony’s Playstation 2 console. Several games belonging to the God of War franchise have been released across multiple console and handheld gaming platforms. Each chapter has set Kratos against new threats and built upon his extensive skill set. Sony rebooted God of War in 2018 and introduced Kratos’ son, Atreus, a hybrid of the Greek and Norse pantheon. With plenty of mythology to explore, a God of War TV series could result in an expansive (and expensive) fantasy action epic for Amazon.

The latest video game in the God of War franchise, God of War: Ragnarok, won five awards at the 2022 Game Awards, including Best Narrative, Best Score and Music, Best Audio Design, Best Performance (Christopher Judge as Kratos), Innovation in Accessibility, and Best Action/Adventure Game. I’m 47 hours into God of War: Ragnarok as of today. The game is astonishing, and I’m eager to see how the story plays out.
