If you haven't noticed, we're living through some strange times at the moment. In terms of the entertainment industry, COVID-19 has forced studios to make some major changes with how they release movies. Over the past few months, we've seen studios drop more than a few films on streaming services that were once destined for theaters, and that's not likely to stop anytime soon.
According to THR, the latest movie that could be heading to a streaming service might just be GODZILLA VS. KONG, the upcoming film from director Adam Wingard (YOU'RE NEXT) that pits the two giant titans against one another. The outlet has heard from several sources that Netflix has made an offer of more than $200 million for the film, but that WarnerMedia blocked the deal and are planning on preparing their own offer to stream the film on HBO Max. Legendary Entertainment declined to comment, but a spokesperson for Warner Bros. said, "We plan to release GODZILLA VS. KONG theatrically next year as scheduled." THR added that WarnerMedia CEO Jason Kilar and Warner Bros. chairman Ann Sarnoff are said to be working on an offer that will allow for a streaming release that "also includes a theatrical component," perhaps similar to the recent WONDER WOMAN 1984 release plans that will find the film debuting on both HBO Max and in theaters on Christmas Day. Should the simultaneous HBO Max/theatrical release of WONDER WOMAN 1984 go as planned, I'd imagine that we could easily see GODZILLA VS. KONG following suit.

The film, which stars Millie Bobby Brown, Kyle Chandler, Alexander Skarsgard, Rebecca Hall, Brian Tyree Henry, Zhang Ziyi, Demian Bichir, and Julian Dennison, is currently slated for a May 21, 2021 release.
