I wonder how many people didn’t really know who Hunter S. Thompson was before Johnny Depp brilliantly portrayed him in Terry Gilliam’s FEAR AND LOATHING IN LAS VEGAS?

Well, here’s another opportunity to get to know the late maverick journalist, courtesy of Oscar-winning filmmaker Alex Gibney (TAXI TO THE DARK SIDE). His biopic GONZO: THE LIFE AND WORK OF HUNTER S. THOMPSON is narrated by Depp (partially in “character”, from the sound of it) and seems to take a different approach to the wildman than the recent documentary BUY THE TICKET, TAKE THE RIDE.

The movie opens in limited release on the Fourth of July — what better way to celebrate the country’s independence than with an advocate of guns, drugs and freedom of speech?
