Hammer the Right One

I’ve already gone on a bit about how much I enjoyed the Swedish vampire thriller/drama/dark comedy LET THE RIGHT ONE IN
(see trailer below)
– first in my review, then in my article about the flick’s big win at the Tribeca Film Festival. In my third article in a week about the Tomas Alfredson chiller, I’m writing about the remake, which we already knew was happening, so no need to get our panties bunched up in our mouths…

Variety reports that Hammer Films and Spitfire Pictures have acquired the rights to the film, and are setting about hiring a writer as we speak (or as I type, and you read). Simon Oakes, Guy East and Nigel Sinclair will produce. Alex Brunner and Tobin Armbrust will exec produce along with John Ptak, Philip Elway and Fredrik Malmberg.

Of course, Hammer Films was relaunched last year (read about that HERE) and this isn’t a bad flick to run with, honestly. The old Hammer studio were vampire movie specialists, and while RIGHT ONE is by no means a conventional spin on the bloodsuckers, it sticks to the basic rules that we’ve come to associate with vamps (i.e. you have to invite them in; their fear of sunlight, etc). For whatever reason, I’m not blowing a gasket over this remake. Maybe its weariness from the constant onslaught of “reimaginings,” or maybe it’s just a fool’s hope that this will get done right… We shall see, won’t we?
