No, I still have not seen SCREAM 4. Based on the domestic box office cume, I’m not alone. The Wes Craven film has made only $37 million here in the U.S., a no-doubt-about-it disappointment. The only thing saving it from being a flop is the foreign take, which at the moment stands at approximately $50 million. With a budget in the $40 million range, and DVD sales sure to be decent, the film might yet be considered a minor success story. But will it be enough to justify going forward with SCREAM 5?
Weinstein Company head honcho and SCREAM executive producer Harvey Weinstein seemed confidant enough about the prospect of another flick in an interview with MTV. The famously blustery exec said about the box office cume: “I wish it would have been better domestically, but foreign is so strong that we’ll do over a hundred million dollars worldwide. It’s at $90 now, with about five or six major countries to go and a lot of small ones. We’ll probably do $110 million. It’s not the worst thing in the world that’s ever happened.”
When asked if he’s counting out a sequel, Weinstein nonchalantly responded: “I’m sure he’s going to do a sequel. I’m sure he’s going to do a sequel.”
While the “he” Weinstein mentions isn’t named, it’s hard to imagine he means anyone other than Wes Craven – although he might be referring his own brother, Bob, who runs Dimension Films. Either way, Harvey certainly doesn’t act like he’s expecting the franchise to end at 4. To watch the interview, head on over to MTV.
