Hatchet goes Theatrical

Anchor Bay is slowly but surely becoming a force to be reckoned with when it comes to releasing the genre theatrically. They recently announced their first limited release with BEHIND THE MASK: THE RISE OF LESLIE VERNON (see story HERE), and today they acquired both theatrical and DVD distribution rights to Adam Green’s homage to the 80s, HATCHET!!!

I don’t know why I find this news so exciting, but I do. Anchor Bay has been hookin’ us up with genre love on DVD and video for years, and now they’re finally makin’ their way to the big screen. Very cool stuff right there. Plus, it’s frickin’ HATCHET baby, one of the cooler lookin’ movies coming out right now.

HATCHET was a no-brainer for the Bay, as film fests around the world had sold out crowds trying to catch a glimpse of some ‘old school American horror’, so it’s no surprise they’re trying to recreate that hype for the flick. If you live in a box (not THIS type), here’s what HATCHET is all about:

Hatchet spins a terrifying tale of tragedy and comeuppance from beyond the grave. Victor Crowley is a hideously deformed boy, living in seclusion with his father (Kane Hodder) in an isolated cabin deep in the Louisiana bayou. When a Halloween prank initiated by local kids goes terribly awry, Victor is accidentally killed in a vicious twist of irony. Years later, a tourist group visiting New Orleans’ “haunted swamps” stumble upon the remnants of that shocking event, transforming an evening of seemingly innocent fun into a horrific nightmare, from which there may be no escape.

The Arrow himself seemed to dig the bejesus out of it, and I have yet to read one negative review on the sucker… which means it must be flippin’ awesome! So when can we expect this badboy in theaters? No specific date has been set, but it’s been said that April 2007 is when it will likely happen. Yes, in 2007, April is the next October- as GRINDHOUSE and PRIMEVAL are currently both slated to be released that month as well. Flippin’ awesome! I can’t wait!

Stick around for more updates on HATCHET’s theatrical run, like that elusive release date, as we’ll let you know as soon as we hear it!
