After almost a year and a half wait between seasons, the second season of the Michael Crichton-inspired series Westworld only just started airing on HBO on April 22nd – and the network has already ordered a third season.
Based on Crichton's 1973 film WESTWORLD, the series
takes place in a futuristic theme park populated with androids. In the second season, the androids have revolted against their human creators.
The cast of the show includes Evan Rachel Wood, Thandie Newton, Ed Harris, Jimmi Simpson, Jeffrey Wright, James Marsden, and Tessa Thompson.
Although I'm interested in checking out Westworld (I still haven't seen a single episode), I never would have expected a series based on the '73 movie would be as well-received as this show has been. The first season averaged 13.2 million viewers and earned 22 Emmy nominations.
Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy adapted Crichton's concept into the series format and serve as executive producers on the show with J.J. Abrams, Richard J. Lewis, Roberto Patino, Athena Wickham and Ben Stephenson. Westworld is a production of Warner Bros. Television, Nolan and Joy's Kilter Films, and Abrams' Bad Robot.
Casey Bloys, president of HBO Programming, is "excited to see where the next chapter will take us"… but before Westworld gets to season 3, viewers have 8 more episodes of season 2 to get through.
