HBO, Game of Thrones, Season 8

For a year, acclaimed British filmmaker Jeanie Finlay has been lurking in the shadows, chronicling the events of HBO's last and most ambitious season of GAME OF THRONES. Why has Finlay been observing the goings on of one of the most anticipated events in television history, you ask? Well, it's because on Sunday, May 26 (9:00-11:00 p.m. ET/PT), one week after the series finale, HBO will present GAME OF THRONES: THE LAST WATCH, a documentary orchestrated by Finlay that promises to delve deep into the mud and blood to reveal the tears and triumphs involved in the challenge of bringing the fantasy world of Westeros to life in the very real studios, fields and car-parks of Northern Ireland.

The in-depth documentary will also be made available via HBO NOW, HBO GO, HBO On Demand as well as other HBO-related partners and streaming services.

Here's the scoop from the documentary's official press release:

Made with unprecedented access, GAME OF THRONES: THE LAST WATCH is an up-close and personal report from the trenches of production, following the crew and the cast as they contend with extreme weather, punishing deadlines and an ever-excited fandom hungry for spoilers.

Much more than a "making of" documentary, this is a funny, heartbreaking story, told with wit and intimacy, about the bittersweet pleasures of what it means to create a world – and then have to say goodbye to it.

GAME OF THRONES: THE LAST WATCH marks Finlay's eighth feature film, after serving up documentaries such as SEAHORSE, ORION: THE MAN WHO WOULD BE KING, PANTOMIME, THE GREAT HIP HOP HOAX, SOUND IT OUT, and GOTH CRUISE.

The new doc will arrive as a Glimmer Films production for HBO with Jeanie Finlay in the director's seat. David Benioff, D.B. Weiss and Bernadette Caulfield will executive produce, while Finlay, Rachel Hooper and Martin Mahon will also produce.

The documentary is poised to serve as an informative love letter to fans of the series, especially those who've been sitting tight while waiting for the show's eighth and final season. I have a feeling that our bodies are not ready for this. In fact, you might want to wear some armor to this thing.

The premiere episode of GAME OF THRONES Season 8 will air on April 14th via HBO services.
